Current Status-February 2007

During the months of December and January, a group of citizens came together and convinced the Leelanau County Road Commission to postpone removing the tree. This group raised funds to hire tree specialists to inspect and report on the health of the Cottonwood. During the January meeting of the LCRC, the ad hoc group of concerned citizens presented the findings. The LCRC and the group of citizens have agreed to work together to preserve this historic tree

Currently, we have until March 31st to complete the necessary pruning and cabling of the tree. The estimate to prune and cable the tree is $6000. However, the tree also needs to be inspected annually and further maintenance could be required. Thus, the fundraising goal will be much higher than originally anticipated.
